چکیده

Information regarding bacterial diseases in Cuvier’s beaked whale (CBW, Ziphius cavirostris) is scattered and mostly incomplete. This report describes a case of septicemia by Morganella morganii juvenile male CBW with concurrent renal crassicaudiasis. The animal stranded along the Ligurian coastline (Italy) underwent systematic post-mortem examination to determine cause death. Histopathology showed lesions consistent septicemic infection, severe meningoencephalitis, An M. alpha-hemolytic strain was isolated pure culture from liver, lung, prescapular lymph node, spleen, hepatic abscesses, central nervous system (CNS). antimicrobial susceptibility profile evaluated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) method reduced Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole reported. Crassicauda sp. nematodes were retrieved both kidneys. No other pathogens detected immunohistochemistry, serology, or biomolecular analyses. Toxicological investigations high immunosuppressant pollutants blubber. chronic parasitic infestation toxic effects xenobiotics likely compromised animal's health, predisposing it an opportunistic infection. To our knowledge, this first description CNS involvement wild cetacean.

Dolphin Morbillivirus in a Cuvier’s Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris), Italy

Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) has caused several mortality events in Mediterranean striped (Stenella coeruleoalba) and bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) dolphins populations since 19; in the last 5 years, the virus was reported to infect new hosts in this basin, such as fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), and even a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina). Very recently,...

CUVIER'S BEAKED WHALE (Ziphius cavirostris): Western North Atlantic Stock

STOCK DEFINITION AND GEOGRAPHIC RANGE The distribution of Cuvier's beaked whales is poorly known, and is based mainly on stranding records (Leatherwood et al. 1976). Strandings have been reported from Nova Scotia along the eastern U.S. coast south to Florida, around the Gulf of Mexico, and within the Caribbean (Leatherwood et al. 1976; CETAP 1982; Heyning 1989; Houston 1990). Stock structure in...

Anatomic geometry of sound transmission and reception in Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris).

This study uses remote imaging technology to quantify, compare, and contrast the cephalic anatomy between a neonate female and a young adult male Cuvier's beaked whale. Primary results reveal details of anatomic geometry with implications for acoustic function and diving. Specifically, we describe the juxtaposition of the large pterygoid sinuses, a fibrous venous plexus, and a lipid-rich pathwa...

Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) head tissues: physical properties and CT imaging.

Tissue physical properties from a Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) neonate head are reported and compared with computed tomography (CT) X-ray imaging. Physical properties measured include longitudinal sound velocity, density, elastic modulus and hysteresis. Tissues were classified by type as follows: mandibular acoustic fat, mandibular blubber, forehead acoustic fat (melon), forehead...

Flavobacterium ceti sp. nov., isolated from beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris).

Three isolates of a Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, rod-shaped bacterium, isolated from the lung and liver of two beaked whales, were characterized by phenotypic and molecular genetic methods. Based on cellular morphology and biochemical criteria, the isolates were tentatively assigned to the family Flavobacteriaceae, although they did not appear to correspond to any recognized s...
